On 9-12 July 2012 the first Lova International Summer School was held, titled Learning by Doing – Anthropology, Gender, and Ethnographic Fieldwork. The school was organised as part of Lova’s educational endeavour. Our Summer School focused on learning about and submerging oneself in the methods and conduct of ethnographic field research. We aimed to bring participants in touch with new anthropological perspectives on gender studies and a network of gender scholars. The approach during interactive workshops was learning by doing’, implying a ‘hands on’ approach to stimulate critical thinking and discussions among students and tutors.
In the lectures, workshops and excursions we discussed topics like technology and gender, romantic love in Europe, observing hidden populations such as sex-workers in Amsterdam, violence and masculinity in Latin America. Participants practiced and refreshed their academic skills, were stimulated to reflect on their own research project and improved their presentation skills in a mime workshop. The tutors were experienced university teachers and young trained anthropologists.
The school was designed for students (BA, MA, PhD) and life long learners with an interest in anthropology, ethnographic fieldwork and gender studies.
