Board
In 2024 the board consisted of Jasmijn Rana as chair, Ina Keuper as treasurer, Tine Davids for general affairs, Loes Oudenhuijsen for Lova Journal. Nabila Tasneem Anonnya who fulfilled the secretarial post since May 2022 left the board in March and Juliette Roussel who took care of the PR position since April 2021 left us in June. A call for applications for new board members was sent out by Lova Mail Service (LMS) in September but no replacement was realised. Ina took up most of the secretarial tasks and the website, while Jasmijn took care of the social media of Lova.
The board had five meetings: February 21, April 3, June 12, September 3, November 4; all meetings were held online. In November the board had an informal dinner meeting with Paula Vermuë and Lise Zurne as members of the Lova Journal editorial board and Lova’s graphic designer Willy Cremers.
Lova Journal
Early 2024 the editorial board completed Lova Journal #44, which was shipped in February.
Also in February, the call for Lova Journal #45 was sent out through LMS and widely spread elsewhere because it would be a special issue on Sexist Garbage in Academia. Authors were invited to share personal experiences of sexism and gendered harassment at the workplace in academic institutions; their stories would be published anonymously. In December this issue was sent to members and published on the Lova website. The issue consists of ten anonymous contributions and one article on The Timelessness of Sexist Garbage, based on conversations with Lova members from various generations. It also contains reports about the Lova Honorary Membership of Lorraine Nencel in June.
Lova Journal #45 was compiled by Loes Oudenhuijsen, Jasmijn Rana and Lise Zurné as guest editors, supported by journal editors Ana Carolina de Assis Nunes, Claire Delhumeau and Paula Vermuë. As mentioned in Annual Report 2023, it was the last hard copy issue sent to members.
Lova Events
On 21 June a Honorary Membership was awarded to Lorraine Nencel at the seminar for her retirement as associate professor in the Department of Sociology at VU University Amsterdam. A report of the event was published on the Lova website and Lorraine’s farewell lecture as well as the speech of Tine Davids at the award ceremony were published in Lova Journal #45.
On 20 November the Annual Lova Network Meeting was held at Radboud University Nijmegen. The board decided to speak of Annual Meeting instead of Annual Lova Study Day. The meeting consisted of the General Members Assembly, a keynote lecture by Sonja Marzi titled Volviendo a Vivir / Coming Back to Live: Urban trauma, activism and building emancipatory futures about her research project in the cities of Bogotá and Medellín in Colombia, followed by a comments part by Sanne Weber and a discussion with the audience. A report of the event was published on the Lova website.
Lova International Summer/Winter School
No Summer or Winter School could be organised this year; a restart is planned for 2025.
Lova Mail Service
In 2024 a total of 24 LMS messages have been sent: 4 calls for Lova Journal #45; 3 invitations for Lova events; 1 about the launch of a new Lova website (in June); 1 call for new board members (in September); 1 call for Lova Marjan Rens Master’s Thesis Award 2025; 7 invitations for events or activities of other organisations or persons related to Lova; 7 vacancies at academic institutions.
PR: Website, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn
In the first half of the year technical expert Henk de Vries and board member Ina Keuper continued the construction of the new Lova website in WordPress; new mailbox addresses were also created. On 19 June www.lovanetwork.org was launched and shared through a LMS message to members. On the home page three tiles refer to the main sub pages: News, Blogs, and Journal. The News page is updated regularly with invitations and reports about events organised by Lova. The Blogs page is open for members and non-members to contribute short columns about topics fitting in our mission. The Journal page provides the articles of the last six journal issues. The menu bar on the home page provides links to further information: About, Working Groups, Events, Publications, and Join Us.
Since the depart of PR board member Juliette Roussel the pages on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn have not been updated regularly. We hope to do so again when a new PR board member steps in.
Finances
Like in 2023 we had a quite negative revenue balance. This is largely due to the further rising costs of the printing and graphic design of the Lova Journal. Another large sum was paid for the expert knowledge of the construction of the new Lova website: the creation of the graphic design by Willy Cremers and of the layout and organisation of the content by technical expert Henk de Vries. Both categories of expenditure will be much less in the years to come as we will publish the journal only digitally and the website will require just maintenance costs. Fortunately, we received more membership fees; in 2024 we had 122 paying members. Some members also transferred the delayed fees of previous years and three members already paid the 2025 fee.
